Station Soundscapes is an ongoing project which aims to create meditative space in busy urban waiting areas such as town and city transport hubs (bus stops, train and underground stations) by offering access to music composed from natural soundscapes as a means of momentarily transporting participants away from the noise pollution of their immediate environment. The over exposure to sustained noise pollution that those living in built-up areas might experience is thought to have a negative impact on mental health and well-being, causing increased stress and anxiety, while studies have shown that exposure to natural environmental sounds have the opposite effect and can reduce stress hormones and increase our sense of well-being. The aim of the project is to "bring the outside in", offering "alternative modes of transportation" and mindful moments of respite through music. A series of experimental sound works created from field recordings of wildlife and environmental sounds as well as original electronic, vocal and multi-instrumental compositions have been made accessible via QR codes in over 100 locations across London and towns on the outskirts of the city, inviting the audience to listen on their own personal devices. The project was created by multi-disciplinary artist and experimental composer Gwen SiƓn who is interested in using musical composition as a means of mapping space and translating landscapes into sound by incorporating field recordings into her works, creating handmade instruments made from physical fragments of the landscape and reading the shapes, colours, textures and structures of an environment as a musical score to create original compositions.
